CHANGES to the Grades 3-8 English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics Tests

    for spring 2016

As you may have heard, we recently received official notification that NYSED will implement significant changes to the 2016 Grades 3-8 English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics Tests.

    • Questar Assessment, Inc. is the State’s new partner who will be responsible for the construction of this year’s test forms and guidance materials.

    • More NYS teachers will be involved in creating and reviewing the assessments and eventually writing the questions to reflect alignment with classroom practice.

    • Questar will offer extensive item-writing training and workshops for NYS educators and these questions will then follow the procedure of filed testing in the spring of 2017

    • Decrease in the number of test questions on ELA and Math assessments starting this year: Students will read one less passage in ELA and answer fewer questions on both assessments.

    • Untimed testing: Transition starting this year to untimed testing to provide students opportunity to work at their own pace.

We expect further guidance from NYSEDC  to help us implement these revisions and to answer questions from educators.
