French 1 is a beginning course in the study of the French language and culture. This course is open to all students who have not previously studied French. A communicative approach to second language study is used, and emphasis is placed upon both oral/aural and written communication. Students are introduced to important aspects of French culture and civilization.
1 Year - 1 Credit Offered: Grades 9-12 Prerequisite: JH French 1 or French 1
French 2 is a transitional course in the study of the French language. An intermediate level of grammatical study is developed. Emphasis is placed on speaking and listening as a means of better and more accurate communication, but units of study relative to developing reading and writing proficiencies are begun. The study of important aspects of French culture and civilization is continued. N.B. This course may be offered on an Honors basis.
1 Year - 1 Credit Offered: Grades 10-12 Prerequisite: French 2
French 3 is an intermediate course in the study of the French language. Emphasis is placed on the refinement of the four basic language skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing through a communicative approach to second language study. Students take the New York State Comprehensive (Regents) Examination in French at the completion of this course. N.B. This course may be offered on an Honors basis.

French 4 is an introductory course in the study of advanced grammar and intense vocabulary, with emphasis upon idiomatic expressions and usage. Authentic materials and video and written media are used to introduce students to non-textual French. Units of study are developed from a variety of materials in an effort to prepare students for more advanced study in French. Emphasis continues to be placed upon oral/aural communication.
1 Year - 1 Credit Prerequisite: French 3
French 4H is an accelerated study of advanced grammar and the application of complex structures to spoken language. Emphasis is placed upon the development of an advanced vocabulary base. Grammar and vocabulary are then integrated into the elements needed for advanced conversation, composition and aural comprehension. Authentic materials, including video and other media, are used to further develop the student's ability to understand, speak and write in a more complex manner. This course is intended to prepare students for French 5AP.
1 Year - 1 Credit Offered: Grade 12 Prerequisite: French 4
French 5 is an advanced course in the study of the French language. Units of study include a more intensive development of the understanding of advanced vocabulary, syntax, and communication skills. Intercultural reading, using authentic French materials, is developed through the study of a variety of literary genres. Conversational skills are better developed through discussion.
1 Year - 1 Credit Prerequisite: French 4/4H AP
French Language is a course that emphasizes the use of language for active communication. The objectives of the course are: 1) to be able to understand spoken French in various contexts; 2) to develop further a French vocabulary sufficiently ample for reading newspaper and magazine articles and literary texts without dependence on a dictionary; and 3) to be able to express oneself both in speech and in writing with reasonable fluency and accuracy. Materials include audio and video recordings, films, newspapers, magazines, as well as French literary works. The course seeks to develop language skills that can be used in various activities and disciplines and to train students in the organization and writing of compositions.
*Students who are enrolled in a course designated AP or Honors/AP are expected to take the Advanced Placement Examination in this discipline.
