At West Side School, Principal Hazut, always hopes the students can go outside for recess, yet, there are days when it is just not possible. “We try to have fun and new indoor recess activities, and in December we were thrilled to receive over 200 Lego bags packaged and delivered for West Side kids!” Thanks to parent volunteer, Lauren Jasinski, and CSH Jr./Sr. High volunteers, individually prepared Lego bags were organized, sanitized, and donated from the community for the children to enjoy. Prior to the pandemic, Ms. Jasinski chaired the Recess Committee and tried to keep the children off technology and engaged in imaginative play. After COVID-19 parents could no longer volunteer for recess, and she had an idea after seeing so many unused Lego pieces in her home. She reached out to community members who responded with an outpouring of donations! There were so many Legos that needed to be sorted, sanitized and bagged she realized she needed help. Thankfully, student volunteers stepped up gaining community service hours. It was the perfect collaboration. Happy Lego days ahead this winter!
