Lloyd Harbor: Students in Mr. Craine’s 6th grade science class celebrated Earth Day by learning about the importance of protecting our drinking water. In cooperation with the North Shore Land Alliance, and with assistance from educator Karen Mossey, students created their own model of an aquifer. The students created a model aquifer by combining sand, gravel and clay (soil) and then adding water (precipitation). Together, their models represented the water bearing permeable rocks that contain our drinking water. We followed up by adding food coloring to our models to show the adverse effects that even a small amount of pollution can have on this valuable resource.
