“How thrilling it was to welcome back 374 children, including 45 new students. I want to thank the LHSPTG for the work they do over the summer to prepare for the new year, as well as the Board of Education for all their support. The new family orientation and open house events helped families transition back to school! Our summer Ambassador Program allowed new students to make friends before the start of school. On opening day, the dedication and passion of the LHS staff made our school environment feel special, welcoming, and inclusive! Our Leo the Lion mascot greeted students off the bus. Second graders were also welcomed separately to the gym to greet their teachers and new classmates. We began our year with a school-wide read using a book entitled “Courage” by Bernard Waber. This story, dedicated to heroes, was developmentally appropriate to coincide with the 9/11 Remembrance Anniversary this month, as well as our HIKER Core Values (honesty-inclusiveness-kindness-empathy-respect). The 9/11 event celebrated under the Friday Night Lights at the football game was an amazing collaboration with all the schools, and our Student Council officers were proud to participate and represent LHS. In the upcoming days, we are looking forward to spirit days, alfresco lunches, and outdoor opportunities. I continue to enjoy the students singing outside my window during music class. For me, the highlight of my first week was when I heard an upper grade student say to her friend, ‘This was the best first day of school ever!’ It really touched my heart and I could feel the positive change in the air this year.”
