And the Winner IS….
On January 30, West Side second graders voted in a mock Caldecott Award. The American Library Association awards the Caldecott for the best picture book of the year. School Media Specialist, Erica Fraiberg, asked her students to study past winners. They learned that the pictures help tell the story. Next, students listened to many books that were eligible to win and voted for their favorite. Both classes chose Lauren Snyder and Dan Santat's Endlessly Ever After as their favorite, but Hot Dog, by Doug Salati and Knight Owl, by Christopher Denise were runners-up. Classes were excited to learn that Hot Dog was the Caldecott gold winner and Knight Owl took silver. WOW – impressive judging from the critical eyes of our second graders!
