Goosehill Welcomes Chris Soentpiet Author & Illustrator

Goosehill Primary School was thrilled to welcome award-winning children’s book illustrator and author, Mr. Chris Soentpiet. Mr. Soentpiet was born in Korea and moved to America in 1970 at the age of 8 and has published 23 books to date! Known for his illustrations of beautiful lighting, students in Ms. DeRop’s class were privileged to participate in an art lesson with him where he asked Principal Cosme to model so he could demonstrate his talents and have the students paint a watercolor following his instruction techniques. There was also a school wide assembly for all the students to hear his story and journey of an illustrious career filled with numerous recognitions and honors. He was very impressed with the art knowledge and inquiry in art teacher, Katrina Albanese, classroom. The students were well versed in their understanding of value, line, texture, shape and color - very impressive! The students were surprised to learn that once Mr. Soentpiet submits his illustrations and writing, he does not see the book until one year later when he reads it for the first time! His message of perseverance was a great lesson to never give up on your dream. He encouraged to draw out of the lines and that mistakes are never wrong. He shared that he was rejected by ten publishing houses before someone decided to give him a chance. Thank you for an amazing day at Goosehill Mr. Soentpiet!
