Speech & Debate Awards

The wins keep coming for this year's Cold Spring Harbor Speech and Debate Team. At this past Saturday's National Eliminations Qualifying tournament sponsored by LIFA, the Long Island Forensic Association, the Public Forum debate team of Fiona Meier and Amber Zhou, both juniors, won 1st place out of eight top Varsity-level Long Island debate teams, receiving unanimous judge ballots from three-judge panels consisting of expert debate judges. The debate topic was "Resolved: On balance, a one-day national primary would be more beneficial for the United State than our current presidential primary process." Fiona and Amber, who earlier qualified for the April 29-30 New York State Championships due to their success at tournaments in November and December, will be competing at the NCFL (National Catholic Forensic League) National Championships in Speech and Debate in Louisville, Kentucky over Memorial Day weekend from May 25-29, 2023. The Debate Coach, Dr. Michael Andrews, attributes their success to the team's natural talent as well as their many hours of hard work evaluating the various aspects of the topic and practicing cross-examination and rebuttals. Before Fiona and Amber get ready for Nationals, they will be preparing for States, along with debate qualifiers Charly Coden and Stephen Schmidt, with the State Championship topic of: Resolved: The United States Federal Government should ban the collection of personal data through biometric recognition technology. Congratulations Fiona and Amber – best of luck at Nationals!
