2nd Grade Learning Expo
What an amazing celebration of learning by our second graders at Lloyd Harbor. Students became the teachers as they shared “what they are experts at” with family members and friends who were invited in to celebrate. The cafeteria tables were filled with visitors who rotated among the students. All were quite surprised to listen to the in depth knowledge showcased in each student’s “All About Books” project about their favorite topic.

Helping the Homeless - at HIHI Huntington Interfaith Homeless Initiative
For many years, the National Honor Society student volunteers have offered their time and care for the local organization HIHI (Huntington Interfaith Homeless Initiative). HIHI offers homeless individuals in Huntington with a safe, warm place to spend the night during the winter months. Comprised of more than 35 local congregations, these groups provide housing, clothing, a hot dinner, breakfast and bag lunch to participants.

Polar Bear Plunge
This year at the fall “Beach Clean Up” community service event with club advisor, Ms. Erin Oshan, some of the junior high students jumped in the waves and said, ”We should do a Polar Bear Plunge this winter to raise money to support local organizations!” This student driven event took hold, and became a reality sponsored by the CSH Marine Biology Club, and together they made it happen! Ms. Oshan shared, “All proceeds were evenly split between the NY marine rescue center which rehabilitates sick turtles, seals and other marine mammals that find themselves stranded on our local shores and 4OCean which is removing tons and tons of plastics from our global waters.”

Salsa with Seniors
Senior Spanish students weren’t quite sure what to expect when they were told “We’re going to learn how to salsa dance!” As a special treat, they gathered in the gymnasium for a lesson spearheaded by the Cultural Arts Committee (CAC), World Language Chairperson, Kristen Wilkens, and Director of Technology, Joseph Monastero.

Phys Ed Bingo Board Competition!
Congratulations to Lloyd Harbor 4th graders in Ms. Smith’s class who were the recipients of the first Bingo Health Trophy! The students were so excited when they soared past the competition completing 20 Bingo boards, with runners up in grade 2 Terry’s class with 15 Bingo Boards completed. Will they be able to defend their title in March as the monthly Health Bingo Board challenges continue?

Model UN Club Awards
What an outstanding showing this year for the CSH Model UN Club in Philadelphia! The Ivy League Model United Nations Conference (ILMUNC,) organized by University of Pennsylvania students, takes place in Philadelphia each year at the end of January. ILMUNC involves over 3,000 students from all over the world. Students gather for three nights and four days to work on United Nations Committees trying to solve many different global problems such as climate change, sustainable farming in third world countries, the protection of journalists in war zones and health pandemics to name just a few

Visiting Health Experts
Lloyd Harbor physical education classes were privileged to invite in health experts to speak to classes about various aspects of health and fitness. Over the course of three days, these educators spoke to students and answered questions on many topics. CSH Athletic Director, Michael Bongino, spoke about the opening of the new fitness center to grade 6 students and what they can expect next year as they move up to the Junior High, including school sports, extracurricular clubs, special programs and athlete/student expectations.

"SOUP" ER Bowl
The tradition of collecting soup cans for those in need continued again this year at the elementary schools. Thank you to our generous community for helping to stock the shelves at Helping Hands Rescue Mission in Huntington Station for local families. Student Council members spearheaded the drive along with their Student Council Advisors at Lloyd Harbor and West Side elementary schools. Goosehill also collected boxes to add to the Souper Bowl drive.

Light Up Your Circuit! STEAM Week at Goosehill
First grade students were so excited to “Light Up their Circuits” in the Creative Learning Lab with Library Media Specialist, Marissa Urso. Gathered around tables to engineer their very own “light up greeting card” by building their own circuit, the students were wide-eyed at the wonder of their creations! They learned LED stands for Light Emitting Diodes that glow when powered, and they watched their LED stickers do just that! Most made a Valentine card, others rendered creative designs, and kids and parents alike were fascinated in this mini-challenge of designing their very own STEAM activity!

Happy 100 Day!
Goosehill is always bustling with excitement on the100th Day of school! Kindergarteners can barely contain their excitement to sing songs that they have practiced for weeks with music teacher, Daniel Santangelo; what a show they put on! Parents and families were invited to join in on the fun at the morning assembly and then visited classrooms afterward for a special math activity.

District Wide STEAM Night - Beyond Successful!
What a night! The first annual district-wide STEAM Night was beyond successful - held on February 7 at the Jr./Sr. High School to the delight of students (and parents!) who came out to support this amazing endeavor that hosted nearly 1000 participants in our community. The STEAM Night was a K-12 initiative that provided an opportunity for teachers and high school students to teach younger students about Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math.

Upcycling Art
4th grade students at Lloyd Harbor are “Upcycling” by taking “old” products (such as water bottles) and giving them a new life and turning them into “new” products. These creative “Under the Sea” images inspired by the works of Nicole Stott, artist, astronaut, and author resulted in the most beautiful sea image designs!

Junior High Staff Visits 6th Graders
Every year, the Junior High staff takes the time to visit Lloyd Harbor and West Side 6th grade classes to ease fears and answer a myriad of questions about stepping up to the junior high next year. Assistant Principal Caitlyn Harman, Dr. Suzanne Main, Kristin Wilkens, and Marc Beja conducted visits that focused on the changes students will experience in their transition to the Jr/Sr High School including course selection for both foreign language and music, as well as other academic/extracurricular offerings students will have the opportunity to experience.

Science Mini-Research Grant Award
The New York Institute of Technology has selected three CSH recipients for the 2023 Sixth Annual Mini-Research Grant Award! Congratulations to Milan Lustig, Ryan Smith (both in grade 10), and Lucas Wolf (grade 11). The school received funding for their research proposal “SMAAC - Simplistic Manipulative Accelerated Airfoil Control.”

Principal for the Day!
It's unclear who learned more - Lloyd Harbor Principal Massimo or her Principal Ambassadors for the day! This is the second exciting year students had the opportunity to shadow both Principal Valerie Massimo and Assistant to the Principal Brent Chiarello. This opportunity was part of the annual school fundraiser "Lloyd Harbor Unites", whereby two second grade students: Louis Costa (aka Principal Costa) and Lincoln Meierhans (aka Assistant Principal Meierhans), learned the ropes of administrative duties.

Senior Citizen “Pre-Show” Dinner
It was a packed house on Thursday night Feb. 2 as the National Honor Society hosted a "pre-show" dinner prior to the production of “Chicago Teen Edition.” Seniors arrived to the Jr./Sr. High School cafeteria welcomed by trays filled with pastas, salads, rolls and student waiters and waitresses delivering all requests, sprinkling Parmesan cheese, pouring lemonade and coffee, and making sure everyone’s needs were met.

Debate Awards
An Undefeated Team Win - Amazing! On Feb. 4, at Long Island's Debate Eliminations tournament, held at Sayville H.S., sophomores Charly Coden and Stephen Schmidt won 1st place in Public Forum Debate, winning 4-0, the only undefeated team in their division, qualifying them for the New York State Championships in Speech and Debate, which will be held April 29-30.
