    Speech & Debate Awards

    The wins keep coming for this year's Cold Spring Harbor Speech and Debate Team. At this past Saturday's National Eliminations Qualifying tournament sponsored by LIFA, the Long Island Forensic Association, the Public Forum debate team of Fiona Meier and Amber Zhou, both juniors, won 1st place out of eight top Varsity-level Long Island debate teams, receiving unanimous judge ballots from three-judge panels consisting of expert debate judges.

    2023 FIRST LI Regional Winners! CSH Cyberhawks at Hofstra

    WOW!!! Determination and perseverance paid off for the CSH CyberHawk team 2875 at the Long Island Regional 1 Competition from March 20-22. This international competition hosted over 48 teams from New York, Chinese Taipei, India, Turkey, the Dominican Republic, and the United Kingdom! The CyberHawks progressed through to the final match undefeated.

    Literary Luncheon Astronaut~Author~Artist, Nicole Stott

    Celebrating 21 years of the Literary Luncheon! Each year, the CSHPTG (Jr./Sr. High School parent/teacher organization) sponsors their largest fundraiser, the "Literary Luncheon." All funds raised support the Cultural Arts Programs brought in for all the schools in the district. This year, the CSHPTG was pleased to introduce, Nicole Stott, who spoke about her book, Back to Earth on March 22 to a sold-out crowd at the Huntington Crescent Club.

    Buster the Bus

    Bus safety is paramount to our youngest at Goosehill who must learn to navigate all the rules of what it means to ride the bus and follow the rules. Huntington Coach realized that just training the drivers was only part of the equation, the students themselves need to be taught bus safety in the classroom. Enter “Buster the Bus,” a robotic miniature bus that is remote controlled with blinking lights, eyes, a working stop sign arm, and it speaks!

    Harvard Club Distinguished Teacher Awards Honoring Elana Axelrod, April Henry and Anthony Pesca

    Cold Spring Harbor Central School District is pleased to announce that three of our teachers were selected for the 2023 Harvard Club Distinguished Teacher Award Program. Each year, the Harvard Club of Long Island (HCLI) asks current Harvard undergraduates to nominate a teacher who made the greatest difference in their lives (anonymous).The Harvard Club interviews hundreds of student applicants to Harvard College and they hear about many wonderful teachers from grateful students and parents.

    Corey’s Promise District-Wide Sports Night

    Oh, what a night! The first annual district-wide “Charity Event” sports night was held on March 9 for students, staff and families. This collaborative effort to bring the schools and community together has been a vision of Superintendent Jill M. Gierasch, and an important Board of Education District Goal. By increasing family and community engagement, it is the hope of administration to develop greater partnerships by offering K-12 special events at programs like the fall Homecoming game half-time and pre-game carnival, and the first district-wide STEAM Night and Parent University Night.

    Goosehill Welcomes Chris Soentpiet Author & Illustrator

    Goosehill Primary School was thrilled to welcome award-winning children’s book illustrator and author, Mr. Chris Soentpiet. Mr. Soentpiet was born in Korea and moved to America in 1970 at the age of 8 and has published 23 books to date! Known for his illustrations of beautiful lighting, students in Ms. DeRop’s class were privileged to participate in an art lesson with him where he asked Principal Cosme to model so he could demonstrate his talents and have the students paint a watercolor following his instruction techniques.

    AP Collegial Circles CSH hosts neighboring districts...

    Recently, Cold Spring Harbor Central School District spearheaded and hosted unique collaborative learning experiences for AP teachers across 31 Long Island districts. These AP Collegial Circles united 101 teachers on our campus who engaged in productive workshops entailing open dialogue, problem-solving and networking, all with an eye on improving student learning and achievement.

    Laugh A Lot Poetry!

    West Side students learned quickly that author, Darren Sardelli, is not your typical poet! Born on Long Island, he grew up with 4 brothers, playing hockey and yes…writing poetry! His humorous rhymes have been featured on radio Disney, in magazines, textbooks and Scholastic children’s books. From an early age, he kept an “idea book” and to date has filled nearly 100 idea books that have inspired his writing.

    Bagpipes and a Mascot NAMING

    As a St. Patrick’s Day surprise, Security Team member Kevin Markham graciously agreed to share his bagpiping talent with West Side School. Mr. Markham brought a few special guests to join an assembly. Dr. Barnes interviewed the musicians afterward, and the students listened to advice about music, how practice really does make perfect in life, and you’re never too old to learn something new!

    DNA Restriction Enzyme Analysis Jr. High visits DNALC

    Junior High science students from Mr. Garcia, Ms. Walcott and Ms. Villanti's classes were privileged to visit our neighbors at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory DNA Learning Center. DNALC educators in three separate classrooms set up students with the equipment necessary for an experiment using samples of DNA from bacteriophage Lambda. Students had to cut with two different restriction enzymes, EcoRI and HindIII. Each enzyme recognizes and cuts at a different DNA sequence.

    National Merit Finalist

    After qualifying as a semi-finalist in the fall of 2022, finalists must continue to demonstrate a commitment to high academic standards and other requirements to advance. CSH School District and the entire administration are extremely proud of this truly remarkable achievement – congratulations to our scholar, Annabelle Coles! Annabelle will be attending Dartmouth College this fall and we wish her the best of luck.

    French Club Visits Quebec!

    Members of the French Club along with Madame Koob, Monsieur Montanaro, and Señora Monck-Rowley traveled to “La belle province” for a 3-night 4-day cultural adventure where they got a test of “La culture québéquoise”. This year, the favorite highlights were a ride on “La grande roue de Montréal”, a huge ferris wheel that provides panoramic views of the entire city, a cultural scavenger hunt in the streets of Old Montréal, and taking in the spectacular views from the top of Mount Royal Park.

    Popsicle Stick Bridges - STEM design challenge

    Science teacher, Diana Diaz, had her 7th-grade students complete an amazing bridge project challenge. The goal of this project was to apply concepts in physics to build a bridge of popsicle sticks that would hold the most weight. An efficiency score was calculated for each bridge, and the bridge with the highest value won for best design! Ms. Diaz shared, “In the end, students understood the basics of engineering bridges, worked collaboratively, and created their own popsicle stick bridges.”

    Let’s Read Together!

    Goosehill Kindergarteners in Ms. Ranaldo’s class anxiously awaited their visiting school mates from Ms. DeRop’s first graders. The older students were very proud to read aloud as they were matched with new friends. Afterward, they asked if the kindergarteners would then share a read aloud back! It was a great exchange of learning, friendship, and confidence boosting – the students loved choosing their books and sharing their reading skills!
