The Great Pumpkin Investigation

Kids love pumpkin carving, pumpkin pie – and yes, pumpkin math. Who knew? At Lloyd Harbor School, fifth graders explored measuring length and circumference, weight and mass as well as volume. Students used tape measures to record results in centimeters and inches, and using scales they predicted weight in pounds/ounces and conversions to grams. Perhaps the most fun was dunking their pumpkins in buckets of water to measure the volume using beakers, funnels and graduated cylinders, while predicting if their pumpkin would sink or float? Classrooms also tapped into their creative pumpkin mindset to decorate pumpkins, make keychains and bead bracelets, tackle seek and find puzzles and crack hidden pumpkin problem-solving! So much pumpkin fun!
