EAT - SLEEP - MATH - REPEAT!
Students at the elementary level take math competitions very seriously! All year long, both Lloyd Harbor and West Side School participate in the “Math Olympiads” monthly for grades 4-6. They are put to task for problems of the week and monthly challenges. West Side teacher Kerry Markin shared, “We want students to see themselves as problem solvers and mathematicians. Each week, students are encouraged to participate in problems of the week, in order to prepare them for their monthly Olympiad Challenges.” All of this preparation leads up to the 3rd annual Suffolk County Virtual Math Tournament where students compete virtually against 44 schools across Long Island.
The tournament is geared towards students who are excelling in the classroom during mathematics and might enjoy an extra challenge. On May 16, West Side and Lloyd Harbor teams competed virtually against 44 schools across Long Island, and also competed in the individual 5th Grade and 6th Grade Divisions contests. Each team consisted of 5 students per grade level. The students were chosen based on the highest scores from their 2023-2024 school wide “Math Olympiad” competitions. Stay tuned as Five All Star students from each school will be competing at SUNY Old Westbury on May 29 for the final competition! Special thanks to math teachers Kerry Markin from West Side and Lauryn Grefe from Lloyd Harbor, as well as all of our math educators! Congratulations to all participants!
