Welcome to the Library Media Center which houses over 14,000 materials including fiction, nonfiction, professional and reference titles. Subscriptions are made for a wide variety of magazines for students and teachers.  Our non-print sources include audio books (cassettes, CDs, and Playaways—books in mp3 format), eBooks, popular fiction and nonfiction movies in VHS and DVD format, laptops for student use and desktops for student research or catalog searching.

Students access our online catalog of materials using our OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog) computer stations to find books in the library and review books that they have read for their peers.  The catalog can also be accessed from home.  Additionally, we subscribe to World Book Online, Ebscohost, Infotrac, and several Grolier databases.  All can also be accessed from home.  To access the databases, please contact Mrs. Fraiberg at 516.692.7900 or efraiberg@csh.k12.ny.us for login information.  To access our online catalog of materials from home, click here.

    Mission

Our mission is to support the curriculum. We work with classroom teachers to find the best resources and use them to the best advantage. We also hope to foster life-long readers with a strong literature and storytelling program.

My goal as a library media specialist is to promote the use of the Library Media Center not only for instruction, but for the encouragement, enjoyment and independent exposure to a variety of materials to enhance and supplement the district curriculum.

    Library Schedule

Our library operates on a fixed/flexible schedule which sees every Second, and Third grade class for one scheduled period per week.  This time is used for a library skills lesson as well as book exchange.  Fourth - Sixth grade comes in as needed for research. Throughout the day students are encouraged to drop off and select new materials.  Students interested in independent study are welcome to come to the library as well.  See your teacher or Mrs. Fraiberg for details.

In addition, all grades receive coding instruction.

    Rules for Borrowing Books

At West Side School books, magazines, and other materials may be borrowed for a three week period.  We ask you to help your child establish the excellent habit of returning materials in a timely manner.
