Physical Education is based upon the acquisition of knowledge and skills that are the foundation for engaging in physical activity.  The mission of Physical Education is to empower all students to sustain regular, lifelong physical activity as a foundation for a healthy, productive, and fulfilling life.  It must be a carefully planned sequence of learning experiences designed to fulfill the growth, development, and emotional needs of each student.

Physical Education is a sequential educational program.  It is based on physical activities undertaken in an active, caring, supportive, and nonthreatening atmosphere in which every student is challenged and successful.  Students with disabilities are provided with a learning environment that is modified, when necessary, to allow for maximum participation.

    Program Implementation

A comprehensive and integrated program of Physical Education.

A program which strives to provide a sample of, and instruction in, a broad range of fitness activities, sports (team and individual), and games. Part of the focus of the program will be placed on the acquisition and practice of fundamental motor skills as well as an introduction to cooperative games.

This Physical Education program will be integrated in the sense that some of the most important values that we wish to impart at each grade level such as respect for others, cooperation, developing self-esteem/confidence, and hard work will be stressed in every unit that we study. Among the specific goals of the West Side Elementary School Physical Education program are the following:

    • The Physical Education department is dedicated to nurturing curiosity, cultivating imagination, encouraging creativity, and fostering the critical thinking skills of our students through participation in and exploration of athletics.

    • The Physical Education department seeks to create a multi-cultural learning community that encompasses the children, staff, parents, and all those who join in the work of the school. The program values both the uniqueness of each individual child and the relationships they form with one another.

    • The Physical Education department strives to develop athletic units/fitness activities that are interesting and fun, encourage equal participation of all children regardless of gender or ability, and foster the development and growth of self-confidence, personal values, and a respect of self and their peers.

    • The Physical Education department is dedicated to the values of teamwork, cooperation, fair play, and competition among all students while stressing the importance of creating reachable goals and to help guide each student towards the realization of those goals.

    • The Physical Education department understands the importance of introducing life- long activities that will allow all students to reap the benefits of an active and healthy lifestyle.

    • The Physical Education department is dedicated to inspiring all students to become responsible young adults and active, considerate citizens.
