    Welcome to the Science Department

Our principle methodology is a hands-on approach to learning, conducted in a supportive and nurturing environment, wherein students are permitted to learn at their own pace and in their own fashion. Cooperative teaming between the classroom teacher and the science instructor provides all students with the support needed to achieve mastery and success. Our hope is to promote and instill curiosity, integrity, persistence, and an open-minded, yet friendly approach to the wonderful world of science.

    Department Specific Information

Science studies at West Side School focus on a rich array of scientific principles, incorporating topics in general science, earth science, physical science, life science, and chemistry. Our curriculum is a concept-based one, with heavy emphasis on the reintroduction and broadening of fundamental concepts year upon year. Students systematically learn how to acquire information, evaluate what they have learned, and then apply this new knowledge and/or skill in a concrete way. Emphasis is equally placed on strategic problem-solving, creativity development, and application of the scientific method, with the primary goal of inspiring, enriching, encouraging, and challenging every student to meet his or her own potential.
