    Grade 6 FLES @ LHS

The FLES program has been designed to reflect the philosophy and goals found in the national standards, The Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century (ACTFL,1999). The main objective of this Spanish course is to enable the student to attain a measurable degree of communicative competency and proficiency in each of the four linguistic skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students will gain an understanding of how the Spanish language is structured and how they can use this knowledge to express their own needs and talk about the world around them. Grammar and vocabulary are logically sequenced and grouped to make acquisition as natural as possible. The teaching of cultures is an integral part of the program, in which authentic topics are presented. A wide range of exercises, activities, and resources are used.

**Every FLES student at LHS begins taking Spanish in second grade and continues their course of study through sixth grade. The program is designed to give students the foundation necessary to be able to succeed in language acquisition.**

This program will address the three modes of communication: interpretive, interpersonal and presentational. Through these modes students will be able to:
    • Demonstrate understanding in spoken and written communication within appropriate cultural contexts.
    • Engage in verbal and written communication with others.
    • Present orally and/or in writing information, concepts, and ideas to an audience of listeners or readers. By the end of this course, students will be able to:
      • give or respond to simple instructions and commands.
      • ask and answer questions about themselves and others.
      • organize thoughts into simple sentences and paragraphs.
      • re-tell stories based on TPRs (Total Physical Response Storytelling) technique.
      • understand brief conversations and respond to content questions in the target language.
      • understand concepts through listening activities, answer questions, and briefly re-tell stories.
      • read short dialogues, descriptive paragraphs, and novels, all in the target language.
      • have an awareness of contemporary Spanish culture by watching videos, looking at pictures, and reading short stories.
