The School at Lloyd Manor circa 1711 (Manor of Queens Village)
The oldest school was built in Lloyd Neck for the children and tenants of Henry and Rebecca Lloyd in 1711. They took turns teaching in their school, and they were very “progressive’ in their approach. This was borne out by the fact that one of the slaves, Jupiter Hammon, was the first black poet to be published in America with his poem, “An Evening Thought”.
