What's That You Say?

  • What’s That You Say?

    Fall 2015

    Mr. Miller

    Overview:

Let me first state that it is an absolute privilege to have been asked to teach this class. Mr. Jack Umstatter, the ingenious creator of this course, is a hero of mine, and the heart of the course, words, are my passion. As Mr. Umstatter wrote in the official What’s That You Say curriculum, “the course is designed to foster language curiosity, appreciation, and astute utilization.” He envisioned students experiencing and learning about “the origin, continuation, and current practice of the English language,” which in turn would increase SAT (and other test) scores. However, in addition to fulfilling academic needs, Mr. Umstatter saw the class as a way “to have fun with the English language.”

The class primarily concentrates on four major areas, which will be weaved in together throughout the semester:

    * Etymology (the history and origin of words)

    * Vocabulary and Grammar (learning words and strategies for the ACT and SAT)

    * Word Fun (games, puzzles, wordplay, etc.)

    * Reading Comprehension (cool language-related articles/essays/pieces)

    Goals:

    • to improve our vocabulary skills

    • to learn the origins and stories behind words and phrases

    • to read more insightfully

    • to know the roots of the English language

    • to reach our potential on standardized tests

    What’s That You’ll Need:

    • a journal (for entries and class notes)

    • a folder

      Grading:
Your grade will be based on a balanced combination of your journal (organized and developed), attendance, participation, announced quizzes and any other assignments given.
