• 3rd Grade Unit 4: Inheritance & Variation of Traits "BIG SCIENCE WORDS"

    In this unit, we use some words that are specific to Science. It is not the intention that all students will master these words, but with repeated exposure to these words, students may start using them appropriately. Consider using the words with your child in order to help them see science in the world around them.

    Camouflage: the ability to blend in to the environment

    Exoskeleton: an external skeleton that protects and supports an individual’s body

    Frass: excrement (poop) produced by caterpillars

    Inheritance: the passing of characteristics from parents to offspring.

    Lineage: line of descent from ancestor, parents to offspring

    Molt: periodically shedding the outer layer (skin, hair, etc.) in the process of growing

    Offspring: the young organism produced by parents

    Organism: an individual living thing (plant or animal)

    Population: the same kind of organism living in an area

    Species: the same kind of organism, similar enough to mate and produce offspring

    Trait: a characteristic common to a species

    Variation: differences in the characteristic traits of living things
