3rd Grade Science Information

  • Dear Parents/Guardians,

    In Unit 1 of the 3rd Grade Science 21 program, your child will explore the world of physical science through forces and interactions. By conducting investigations of balanced and unbalanced forces, they will determine cause and effect relationships between electric and magnetic interactions. They also will make predictions about patterns of motion.
    In Unit 2, your child will learn about relationships in past and present ecosystems. They will analyze data from fossils to interpret the environments they lived in long ago, and explore the relationships between habitats and the organisms that live in them today. They will collect evidence about how well dDifferent kinds of animals and plants survive in a habitat and predict what may happen if the environment changes. In addition, they will read informational texts to explain how organisms may form groups to help them find food, defend themselves and survive. Finally, your child will discuss how well various solutions might combat an environmental change in an organism’s habitat.
    In Unit 3, students will explore weather and climate. During our exploration of weather, we will work to describe typical weather conditions expected during a particular season. We will analyze the daily weather forecast and learn how weather affects us. As part of your morning routine, work with your child to check the daily forecast. In addition, allow your child to look ahead to the weekend forecast. A family discussion could happen about the accuracy of the weekly weather based on what they are discussing in class.
    In Unit 4, our final unit, your child will learn about habitats, environments, heredity & inheritance, and life cycles. Students will learn about life cycles of organisms, such as a butterfly. They will learn about the lineage of animals and plants and about the traits that parents pass along to offspring. They will learn how species have adapted over time so that organisms are successful in growing, surviving, and reproducing in a given environment. We will be looking at heredity and inheritance with plants and animals other than human.
